    Hassan II Mosque

    Casablanca, Morocco

The Hassan II Mosque rises straight out of the Atlantic on a rocky platform at the western edge of Casablanca, and it is the image most travellers carry away from the city. Completed in 1993 after roughly seven years of work, it holds one of the tallest minarets in the world at around 210 metres, topped by a laser that points toward Mecca. Much of the prayer hall is built over the sea, a nod to a Quranic verse about God's throne resting upon the water.

What makes it unusual for visitors is access: this is one of the very few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims may enter, and only on an official guided tour. Inside, the scale is genuinely hard to grasp — a retractable roof, hand-carved cedar, zellij tilework, Venetian-glass chandeliers and a floor of polished marble and granite. The craftsmanship was carried out largely by Moroccan artisans, and guides point out the titanium doors and the heated marble floor as you go.

Tours run at set times outside prayer hours and tickets are timed, so the day can pin on getting the slot right. A private driver drops you at the esplanade gate rather than the distant public car parks, lets you time your arrival to a specific tour session, and waits while you explore the vast plaza and seafront afterwards.
