    Kasbah & Ethnographic Museum

    Chefchaouen, Morocco

Anchoring one side of Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the Kasbah is Chefchaouen's oldest monument — a walled fortress built in the town's early centuries to defend against Portuguese incursions and later expanded under the sultan Moulay Ismail. Its thick, ochre-red ramparts stand in deliberate contrast to the blue medina around them, and stepping inside is a quiet break from the busy square.

Within the walls you'll find tranquil Andalusian-style gardens, a small ethnographic museum displaying traditional Rif crafts, weapons, musical instruments and old photographs of the region, and a tower you can climb for a rooftop view over the medina's rooftops and the mountains beyond. There's also a small former prison to see. It's an inexpensive, unhurried stop that adds real historical context to the town's story.

A private tour makes the kasbah easy to fold into a walking loop of the medina — your guide can explain the fort's history and the region's Jebala culture on display in the museum, then continue straight out into the blue lanes, so you're not backtracking or hunting for the entrance in the crowds.
