Chefchaouen's medina is the reason most travellers make the trip up into the Rif Mountains. Founded in 1471 as a fortress town, its walled old quarter climbs the hillside in a maze of stepped alleys where nearly every wall, staircase, doorway and planter is painted in a range of blues, from pale sky to deep indigo. Theories for the colour vary — a legacy of the town's Jewish community, a way to keep interiors cool, or simply a tradition now maintained for its beauty — but the effect is unmistakable and endlessly photogenic.
Beyond the postcard views, the medina remains a living neighbourhood. Artisans sell handwoven wool blankets, leather goods and locally made goat cheese; cats doze on painted steps; and the calls to prayer from the Grand Mosque echo off the walls. The lanes are compact and steep, so exploring is done entirely on foot, wandering up toward the kasbah and out to the edges where the town meets the mountainside.
Because Chefchaouen sits roughly three to four hours by road from Fes or Tangier, most visitors arrive on a long driving day. A private driver handles the mountain route door-to-door, drops you at the medina's edge where vehicles can't enter, and lets you time your walk for the softer light of early morning or late afternoon rather than the midday tour-bus crush.
