    Skala de la Ville

    Essaouira, Morocco

The Skala de la Ville is Essaouira's great sea bastion — a long stone rampart on the northwest edge of the medina, built in the 18th century to defend the port. A row of European brass cannons, many cast in Spain and the Netherlands, still lines the wall, pointing out over the Atlantic while breakers crash against the rocks below. It's a free, open walk and one of the most atmospheric spots in town.

Film buffs may recognise the ramparts and the adjoining Kasbah quarter: Orson Welles shot parts of his 1952 Othello here, and the bastion later stood in for the fictional city of Astapor in Game of Thrones. Beneath the ramparts, arched thuya-wood workshops are set into the fortifications, filling the air with the resinous scent of the local wood as craftsmen turn out inlaid boxes and carvings.

Because the Skala catches wind and evening light, timing matters — and that's where a private tour helps. Your driver drops you close to Bab Doukkala so you avoid a long walk in, and you can stay for the golden hour over the ocean without worrying about arranging transport back to Marrakech in the dark.
