    Koutoubia Mosque

    Marrakech, Morocco

The Koutoubia Mosque is Marrakech's defining landmark, its 77-metre sandstone minaret visible from across the city and, by local convention, taller than any building around it. Completed in the second half of the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty, the minaret is a masterwork of Almohad architecture and served as the template for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. The name comes from the Arabic for booksellers, after the manuscript market that once surrounded it.

The mosque is an active place of worship, so its interior is closed to non-Muslims, but the exterior is the real attraction — the tiered stonework, decorative arched windows, and the copper orbs crowning the summit. Around the mosque stretch well-kept public gardens with rose beds, palms and paths, free to enter and a welcome pocket of calm a short walk from the frenzy of Jemaa el-Fnaa.

The minaret is at its most beautiful when floodlit against a deepening sky, and the call to prayer echoing from it at dusk is a memorable Marrakech moment. A private tour makes it easy to fold the Koutoubia into a wider medina walk and to be here at the right hour, with a driver ready nearby rather than leaving you to hail a taxi in the evening crush.
