    Macaque Trail in Ouzoud, Morocco

    Macaque Trail

    Ouzoud, Morocco

The path that winds down through the olive groves beside Ouzoud Falls is home to a troop of wild Barbary macaques, the only monkey species native to North Africa and the same tail-less macaque famous on the Rock of Gibraltar. They gather along the railings, walls, and tree branches near the trail, especially where it is quiet and shaded, and are one of the highlights of a visit for many travellers.

These are wild animals, not a captive attraction, so encounters are unpredictable and best enjoyed at a respectful distance. Feeding them is discouraged, as it changes their behaviour and diet, and you should keep a firm hold on bags, phones, and food, which curious macaques will investigate. Mornings and late afternoons, when the heat eases and foot traffic drops, are when the troop is most active and visible along the trail.

The walk is a steep, uneven descent under the olive canopy, pleasantly cool but slippery in places. A private driver lets you time your arrival for the quieter early or late hours when the macaques come out, without racing a tour-group schedule, and delivers you right to the trailhead so you save your energy for the climb.

    Highlights

    • Wild Barbary macaques, North Africa's only native monkey
    • Shaded olive-grove path cool even in the midday heat
    • Close but respectful sightings along railings and branches
    • Best activity at dawn and late afternoon when the heat eases
    • A natural, non-captive encounter rather than a staged attraction
    • Views over the gorge and cascades between the olive trees

    Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures drop and foot traffic thins, is when the macaques are most active; spring and autumn offer the mildest walking conditions on the shaded descent.
