Kasbah des Oudayas in Rabat, Morocco

    Kasbah des Oudayas

    Rabat, Morocco

Perched on a bluff where the Bouregreg river meets the Atlantic, the Kasbah des Oudayas is Rabat's most photographed quarter — a walled hilltop of lanes washed in cobalt blue and lime white. Built by the Almohads in the 12th century as a fortified ribat guarding the river mouth, it was later resettled by Andalusian Muslims expelled from Spain, whose whitewashed houses and quiet, cat-filled alleys still give the kasbah its intimate, almost village feel.

You enter through Bab Oudaia, a monumental Almohad gateway of carved sandstone from around 1195 — one of the finest surviving gates of its era, its horseshoe arch framed by bands of interlaced arabesque. Inside, the main lane leads past the oldest mosque in Rabat toward a broad semaphore platform overlooking the ocean, the river, and the whitewashed town of Salé on the far bank. It costs nothing to wander the residential lanes, and the pace here is worlds away from the medina below.

The kasbah's stepped, winding streets and its position above the river make it easy to lose your bearings on foot. A private driver drops you right at the Bab Oudaia gate, saves you the uphill approach in the heat, and can time your visit for the softer light of late afternoon when the blue walls glow and the tour groups have thinned.
