Rabat Medina & Rue des Consuls

    Rabat, Morocco

Rabat's medina is one of the most relaxed old towns in Morocco. Compact and walkable, its grid-like lanes were laid out in the 17th century by Andalusian Muslims and Moriscos expelled from Spain, which is why they feel more orderly than the tangled quarters of Fes or Marrakech. Everyday life dominates: fabric stalls, babouche slippers, spices and street food serve locals far more than tourists, and the constant hard sell you meet elsewhere is largely absent here.

The medina's showpiece is Rue des Consuls, the handsome street that runs up toward the Kasbah des Oudayas. In the 19th century foreign consuls were required to live along it, giving the street its name and some of its finer houses. Today it is the city's carpet and crafts artery — shops and small souks spilling with Rabati rugs, leather, brass and zellij mosaic — and on certain mornings weavers still gather to sell their work. Prices tend to be gentler and the browsing calmer than in the bigger imperial cities.

Because the medina lies between the kasbah, the river and the new town, a private driver can drop you at one gate and collect you at another, so you stroll straight through rather than doubling back. That makes it easy to combine an unhurried wander and some low-pressure shopping with the neighbouring Oudayas kasbah in a single visit.
