Tangier's medina spills downhill from the Kasbah toward the port in a tangle of narrow, whitewashed lanes, arched passages and shopfronts. At its centre sits the Petit Socco (officially Place Souk Dakhil), a small paved square ringed by old cafes and pensions. In the mid-20th century, when Tangier was governed as an International Zone, this square was the notorious hub of the city's cosmopolitan, sometimes shady "Interzone" life — a meeting point for smugglers, spies, writers and artists.
Today the Petit Socco is calmer but still atmospheric: the Café Central and Café Tingis on its edges are good spots to sit with a mint tea and watch the medina go by. Writers including Paul Bowles and William S. Burroughs frequented these cafes, and Burroughs drafted parts of "Naked Lunch" in the surrounding quarter. From the square, stepped lanes lead up toward the Kasbah and down toward the Grand Mosque and the old port gate.
The medina rewards slow, aimless wandering, but its unsigned lanes can disorient first-time visitors and the descent to the port is steep. A private guide or driver who knows the quarter can drop you at the nearest medina gate, walk you through the key streets without backtracking, and steer you past the more persistent touts, so you spend your time on the cafes and views rather than the map.
