Souk El Had in Agadir, Morocco

    Souk El Had

    Agadir, Morocco

Souk El Had is Agadir's great walled market, one of the largest in Morocco, holding thousands of stalls behind its enclosing walls and a set of numbered gates. Inside, the market is loosely organised by trade: whole aisles of fruit and vegetables, sections for spices and dried fruit, argan-oil sellers, potters and ceramics, leather, textiles and household goods, all at everyday local prices rather than tourist mark-ups.

Despite its name — "El Had" means Sunday — the souk trades most days of the week, though Sundays are the busiest and most complete. It is a working market for Agadir's residents first and foremost, which is exactly what gives it its atmosphere: this is where the Souss valley's argan oil, olives, spices and produce actually change hands.

The scale can be disorienting, and the numbered gates make it easy to lose your bearings. A private guide helps you navigate to the right sections, points out fair prices, and arranges a driver to meet you at a set gate afterwards — so you can carry your argan oil and spices back to the car without retracing the maze.
