The Agafay desert is not a sea of Saharan dunes but a rolling landscape of bare, ochre-coloured hills that begins about 40 kilometres southwest of Marrakech, on the road toward the Atlas foothills and the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir. Its stony, moon-like terrain feels desert enough — big skies, silence, and long views back to the snow-capped High Atlas — while sitting close enough to Marrakech to visit in half a day, with no six-hour drive to Merzouga required.
Over the past decade the plateau has filled with a scatter of luxury desert camps and lodges built low to the ground so as not to spoil the horizon, where guests come for camel rides at sunset, quad-bike and buggy tracks across the hills, hot-air balloon flights at dawn, and long candlelit dinners under a very dark sky. It is popular with couples on short escapes from the city and with families who want a taste of the desert without the logistics of the deep south.
Because the plateau is spread out, tracks are unmarked, and camps sit at the ends of unpaved pistes, a private driver is by far the simplest way to visit. You can be picked up from your riad in Marrakech, delivered directly to your chosen camp for lunch, camel ride and sunset, and driven home the same evening — or built into a longer High Atlas loop the next day.
