    Imlil Village

    Atlas, Morocco

Imlil sits at roughly 1,740 metres in a steep valley of the High Atlas, about 60 kilometres south of Marrakech at the end of the paved road up from Asni. It is the main gateway to Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, and the village square is where trekkers hire mountain guides and load mules for the climb to the Toubkal refuges. Even without a summit attempt, the setting is striking: terraced fields, walnut and apple orchards, and snow-capped ridges rising directly behind the flat-roofed houses.

The village itself is small and walkable, built around a stream with a cluster of cafés, guesthouses and shops selling local walnuts, dried fruit and Amazigh crafts. From the square, well-trodden mule paths climb to nearby hamlets and to Kasbah du Toubkal, the converted fortress on the hillside above town that featured in Martin Scorsese's film Kundun. Because Imlil is genuinely a working mountain community rather than a resort, the pace is slow and the mountain views are the main event.

The road from Marrakech winds through Asni and the Kik plateau, and the last stretch is narrow and switchbacked. A private driver handles the mountain driving and drops you right in the village, so you can arrive early before the day-trip crowds, take a walk with a local guide, and head back at your own pace instead of watching a group clock.
