Essaouira's medina is one of Morocco's most walkable old towns — a UNESCO World Heritage Site laid out in the 1760s by the French engineer Théodore Cornut under Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah. Unlike the tangled, organic medinas of Fes and Marrakech, its streets follow a broadly rectilinear grid inside star-shaped ramparts, so getting lost is hard and the pace is calm. Essaouira has long drawn artists and musicians — it hosts the annual Gnaoua World Music Festival — and the low-hassle atmosphere makes browsing far gentler than the big imperial cities.
