    Skala du Port

    Essaouira, Morocco

The Skala du Port is the harbour-side bastion at the southern end of Essaouira's waterfront, guarding the entrance to the fishing port. Its square tower and crenellated walls frame the town's most photographed view: a foreground of bright blue wooden fishing boats, the ramparts curving behind, and the low profile of Mogador Island out in the Atlantic haze. A small entry fee gets you up onto the tower.

The stone gateway and its decorative arch — carved with local motifs — are handsome in their own right, and from the top you look straight down onto the working port as boats come and go. The island offshore, Mogador (Île de Mogador), is a protected reserve and one of the few nesting sites of the rare Eleonora's falcon; it's not open to casual visitors, which keeps its silhouette pleasingly wild on the horizon.

The viewpoint is best paired with the neighbouring fishing port, and a private tour lets you time it well — arriving late morning when the boats and light are at their best, then walking a few minutes to Place Moulay Hassan for lunch, all without backtracking to a car park.

    Highlights

    • Classic postcard panorama of the blue fishing fleet and ramparts
    • Ornately carved harbour gateway and square watchtower
    • Views out to Mogador Island, an offshore nature reserve
    • Elevated vantage directly over the working port
    • Short walk to the fish auction and Place Moulay Hassan
    • Great vantage for photography in late-morning light

    Best Time to Visit

Late morning, when the boats are in and the light catches the blue hulls; a modest ticket fee applies for the tower.
