Kasbah Taourirt rises at the eastern edge of central Ouarzazate, a dense honeycomb of earthen towers and courtyards that was once one of the largest kasbahs in the south. It served as a residence and stronghold of the Glaoui family, the powerful clan who controlled the caravan routes and much of southern Morocco through the early 20th century, reaching its peak of importance in the 1930s.
Behind the tall pisé walls lies a maze of narrow stairways, cramped living quarters and grander reception rooms. Several of the finest salons have been restored, revealing painted cedar ceilings, carved stucco and zellige tilework that hint at the wealth the Glaoui commanded. Much of the surrounding old quarter is still a lived-in earthen village, so a walk around the kasbah blends restored showpiece rooms with the ongoing daily life of the neighbourhood.
Because it stands right in town, Taourirt is an easy addition to any Ouarzazate visit, and it pairs naturally with the Cinema Museum directly opposite. A private driver drops you at the door, which spares you the walk in the heat and lets you fit the kasbah around film-studio and desert stops on the same day.

Best Time to Visit
Late morning or mid-afternoon is ideal; the restored interiors stay cool and it is quietest outside the midday tour window, with spring and autumn most pleasant.
