    Kasbah & Bab el-Assa

    Tangier, Morocco

Crowning the highest point of the old town, the Kasbah is Tangier's fortified quarter — a compact maze of whitewashed and blue-trimmed lanes enclosed by walls, set apart from the medina below. Historically it held the seat of power: the Dar el-Makhzen (the sultan's palace, now the Kasbah Museum) and the residences of the city's governors. Its quiet squares and photogenic doorways have long drawn artists and, more recently, film crews.

The Bab el-Assa gate marks one of the main thresholds between the Kasbah and the medina, opening onto a small terrace with sweeping views over the rooftops toward the harbour and the Strait of Gibraltar. On clear days the Spanish coast and the hills around Tarifa are visible across the water, roughly 14 kilometres away at the strait's narrowest point. The nearby Place de la Kasbah and the walls around Bab el-Bhar make good vantage points for the same panorama.

The Kasbah is walkable but sits at the top of a steep climb through the medina, and its lanes are easy to lose track of. A private driver can bring you up to the upper gates rather than leaving you to hike the full ascent, and a guide can time the visit for the best light over the strait while walking you straight to the key viewpoints and the museum entrance.
