Licensed site guides wait at the gate (about 200–300 MAD per group for 90 minutes) and are worth it. Spring brings wildflowers among the ruins.

Can non-Muslims enter the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail?

Accepted Answer

Yes — it is one of the few Islamic sacred sites in Morocco open to non-Muslims, covering the courtyards and anteroom (the tomb chamber itself is Muslims-only). Entry is free, modest dress is mandatory, and Fridays are best avoided as visitor access is restricted around prayers.

Yes, on request — the whitewashed holy town spills over two hills between Meknes and Volubilis, and the viewpoint stop takes only a few minutes off the route. Back in Meknes, Bab Mansour and Place el-Hedim are at their best in the evening light.

How do we handle the heat at Volubilis?

Volubilis sits on an open hilltop with virtually no shade, and summer afternoons reach 38–42°C. In July and August we schedule it for 08:30–10:00 or after 16:00, and you should bring a hat, sunscreen, and about 1.5 litres of water per person — there is only a small kiosk on site. Spring, when wildflowers grow among the ruins, and autumn are the sweet spots.

What does Volubilis cost, and is a site guide worth it?

Entry is about 70 MAD per adult (roughly 30 MAD for children), paid at the gate and not included in the tour price. Licensed site guides wait at the entrance and charge around 200–300 MAD per group for a 90-minute walk-through of the mosaics — worth it if you want the Roman city brought to life; entirely optional.

What shoes should we wear for this tour?

Sturdy, closed shoes — Volubilis means a couple of hours on uneven 2,000-year-old Roman paving and dirt paths, and the Meknes medina adds cobbles. This is not a tour for sandals with thin soles.

Is Friday a bad day for the Meknes and Volubilis tour?

It is workable but not ideal: the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum restricts non-Muslim entry on Fridays and the medina quiets down over midday prayers. Volubilis, Bab Mansour, and the imperial-city walls are unaffected, so on a Friday we weight the day toward the Roman site and the panoramas.
