Marrakech to Essaouira: Transport Options Compared
Essaouira is the easiest big day trip from Marrakech: about 190 km west, 2.5–3 hours on a good flat road, with Atlantic air waiting at the end. Here is how the bus, grand taxi, rental car and private driver really compare.
The route at a glance
There is no train to Essaouira — the railway simply doesn't go there — so this is a road decision. The road runs west through argan country, and yes, the tree-climbing goats are real (they eat the argan fruit), though some roadside "goats in trees" photo stops are staged for tips, so keep your expectations and your dirhams calibrated. The route is flat and well surfaced, with no mountain pass to worry about at any time of year. Option 1: Supratours or CTM bus — the budget default
Coaches take about three hours and typically cost 80–140 MAD one way. Supratours departs from beside the Marrakech train station, CTM from its own terminal, and both are reliable. Book ahead in summer and around the Gnaoua music festival in June, when Essaouira fills to bursting. The trade-offs: fixed departure times, luggage-hold queues, and arrival at the bus station outside the medina walls — a walkable distance, but the famous Essaouira wind makes it feel longer with bags.
Option 2: Grand taxi — cheap, cosy, chaotic
Shared taxis leave when full from the ranks near Bab Doukkala. Per-seat prices are low, but "full" means every seat sold, comfort varies wildly with the vehicle's age, and departure time is whenever the last seat fills. Buying the spare seats speeds things up and adds elbow room. It works for flexible solo travellers; it's a poor fit for families, luggage or anyone who values legroom.
Option 3: Rental car — freedom with homework
The drive is easy by any standard. Rentals run from roughly 300–500 MAD a day plus fuel, parking near the medina gates is attended and cheap (small change in MAD), and the argan cooperatives en route become browsable rather than a blur. The homework: one-way fees if you're not looping back to Marrakech, and Marrakech traffic on the way out of town.

What to do when you get there
Essaouira repays even a few hours: the sqala ramparts (Game of Thrones filmed here), the blue fishing port with sardines grilled a few steps from the boats, and the UNESCO-listed medina — straight, breezy lanes that feel far calmer than Marrakech's — plus Gnaoua music spilling out of shops and kite-surfers working the bay.
