Erg Chebbi is the great sea of sand that draws travellers all the way to Morocco's southeastern desert. Rising abruptly from the flat, stony hamada, its rose-gold dunes climb to around 150 metres, catching the light so that their colour shifts from pale apricot at dawn to deep amber and violet at dusk. Unlike a rocky reg desert, this is the classic sculpted-sand Sahara most visitors picture, and it sits right on the doorstep of the village of Merzouga.
The erg is a living landscape: the wind constantly reshapes the crests, and the ridgelines that look fixed at midday will have shifted subtly by the next morning. Camel caravans and 4x4s trace routes between the dunes, desert camps shelter in the hollows, and the vast open horizon makes for some of the darkest, clearest night skies in the country. Climbing even a modest dune is harder than it looks — soft sand swallows every step — so most people head out early or late rather than in the heat of the day.
Because Merzouga is a long drive from the main tourist cities, a private driver removes the hardest part of the trip: you are taken door-to-door to the edge of the sand rather than navigating remote desert roads yourself, and your visit can be timed for sunrise or sunset light while avoiding the busiest midday hours.

Best Time to Visit
Go at sunrise or late afternoon for the coolest air and richest light; spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November) are the most comfortable seasons, as summer midday heat is extreme.
