About 40 kilometres northwest of Merzouga, Rissani is the market town of the Tafilalet oasis and the historic heartland of Morocco's ruling Alaouite dynasty. Its souk is one of the most authentic in the south — a raw, working market that serves local farmers and nomads rather than tourists. It runs on set days of the week, when the town fills with people, produce and livestock from across the palm groves.
The market is a sensory experience: a donkey and mule park where villagers leave their transport, a covered date market piled with the region's famous fruit, alleys of spices, dried goods and hardware, and a livestock area on the edge of town. Rissani is also known for medfouna, the stuffed flatbread sometimes called Berber pizza, baked in local ovens. It is dusty, busy and unpolished — and that is exactly its appeal.
Because the souk only comes fully alive on its market days, timing matters. A private driver knows which days it runs, gets you there when the trading is at its liveliest, and manages the door-to-door journey from Merzouga so you can wander the alleys without worrying about parking or navigation.
