Best Time to Visit Morocco: Month-by-Month
The honest answer: spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times to visit Morocco — warm cities, open mountain passes and a bearable Sahara. But every month works for something, and this guide tells you exactly what.
Morocco is not one climate. Marrakech can hit 40°C while Essaouira sits at 24°C in a sea breeze and the High Atlas holds snow. Pick your month for the region you care about most, then route the rest of the trip around it.
The Short Answer by Season
- March–May: the sweet spot. Wildflowers in the Atlas, 25–30°C in Marrakech, perfect dune temperatures at Merzouga.
- June–August: hot inland, glorious on the coast. Desert overnights still work — but only at dawn and dusk.
- September–November: the second sweet spot. Warm seas, harvest season, thinning crowds after October.
- December–February: mild sunny days in the cities, cold nights, snow on the passes. The quietest, cheapest season outside the holidays.
Crowds and prices track the weather almost exactly. April and October riads book out two to three months ahead and desert camps sell their best tents first; late January and November reward flexible travellers with half-empty monuments and the year's best rates. If your dates are fixed, do not agonise — adjust the route to the month instead, and every season delivers.
Month by Month
December to February
December brings crisp 18–20°C days in Marrakech and real cold after dark — pack layers, because riads are built for summer. Christmas and New Year spike prices for two weeks. January is the coldest month: great walking weather at midday, near-freezing desert nights, and snow that can close the Tizi n'Tichka pass after storms — any Marrakech-to-Sahara drive between November and March needs a buffer day. February starts to soften, with almond blossom in the valleys and the first comfortable Sahara camp nights of the year.
March to May
March opens high season: 23–26°C in the cities and every region accessible. April is arguably the single best month in Morocco — roses coming into bloom in the Dades, warm dunes, green foothills — and the busiest, so book riads and camps early. May turns up the heat inland (low 30s in Marrakech) while the coast and mountains stay ideal; it is our favourite month for the Ourika Valley, though after heavy spring rain remember the riverbed carries flash-flood risk.
June to August
June is the transition: hot afternoons in Marrakech, perfect evenings, and the last comfortable all-day desert window. July and August are for realists. Marrakech and Fes regularly exceed 38°C, and at Merzouga the midday heat is extreme — camel treks run at sunrise and sunset only, and the middle of the day is for shade and pools. The smart summer play is the Atlantic: Essaouira rarely tops 26°C (its trade winds make it a kitesurfing mecca), and Agadir, Tangier and the Rif stay pleasant. City sightseeing works too if you structure it like locals do — early mornings, long lunches, late nights.
September to November
September keeps summer's warmth without its extremes; the sea is at its warmest all year. October is the connoisseur's month — 27°C days, golden light, date harvest in the palm groves, and dunes back to full comfort. November is underrated: 21–24°C in the cities, bright skies, low prices — just watch for the first snowfalls on the high passes late in the month.

Best Time by Region
Marrakech and the imperial cities: October–April for all-day comfort; hot but workable in summer with an early start. Our Marrakech private day tours start at 2,500 MAD per vehicle year-round — the price does not change, but your energy levels will.
The Sahara (Merzouga): October–April is prime. March–April and October offer warm days and mild nights; December–January nights drop near freezing (camps provide thick blankets); July–August is for dawn/dusk only.
The High Atlas: April–June and September–October for hiking. Snow transforms the range from December to March — beautiful from Marrakech, but the Tizi n'Tichka can close after storms.
The Atlantic coast: genuinely year-round. Essaouira and Agadir hold 18–26°C in every month; summer is peak wind (kitesurfers rejoice), winter is peak calm. If your dates fall in July or August, this is where you base yourself and day-trip inland, not the other way round.
Chefchaouen and the north: April–June and September–October are ideal; the Rif is the rainiest corner of Morocco from November to March, which also makes it the greenest by spring.
Ramadan and Festival Dates
Ramadan shifts about 11 days earlier every year. In 2026 it runs from mid-February to mid-March. Morocco absolutely stays open to visitors — monuments, riads and tourist restaurants operate — but local café life pauses by day and erupts after sunset, some sights shorten their hours, and the post-iftar street energy is a genuine cultural experience. If you visit during Ramadan, avoid eating conspicuously in the street by day, and expect quieter souks around Friday midday prayers year-round.
Also worth planning around: the Rose Festival in the Dades (May), the Gnaoua music festival in Essaouira (June), and the two Eid holidays, when transport books out with domestic travellers.

Is summer a bad time to visit Morocco?
