    About This Tour

Trade the three-day Merzouga marathon for the honest Zagora circuit: real desert, less time in the car, and one unhurried night under the stars. Day one climbs the 2,260 m Tizi n'Tichka pass with photo stops, drops into the pre-Sahara to walk the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Benhaddou, and passes Ouarzazate — Morocco's film capital — before following the Draa Valley palm groves down to the dunes near Zagora. There you swap the vehicle for a dromedary and ride 45–60 minutes into the sand for dinner and music around the fire, then sleep in a Berber tent. Day two wakes for sunrise over the dunes, a short camel trek back, and the long drive home via the Draa, Ouarzazate and the Tichka to Marrakech. We're straight with you about the trade-offs: it's roughly seven hours' driving each way, and Zagora's dunes are modest next to Merzouga's Erg Chebbi — but you gain a genuinely private car, flexible stops, and no shared minibus. The road is paved the whole way, so a standard minivan is fine; a 4x4 Land Cruiser is available on request for comfort or a larger group. The standard camp has shared bathrooms; a deluxe en-suite tent with real beds and hot showers is available as an upgrade. From November to March, snow can close the Tichka pass at short notice, so we check road status the day before winter departures.

    Accessibility

A long two-day route with sustained mountain switchbacks over the Tichka pass and roughly seven hours' driving each way — not ideal for severe motion sickness. Reaching the ksar at Ait Benhaddou means crossing the riverbed on stepping stones and a steep, uneven climb. The camp is reached on foot or by camel over soft sand; mounting and riding a dromedary requires reasonable mobility. Standard camp bathrooms are shared; summer midday heat in the Draa/Zagora can exceed 40°C and winter desert nights drop near freezing.
